When the microwave oven is in proper use, water in food continually absorbs the microwave energy. The overall radiation level is therefore kept at a reasonable level. However, in the experiments shown in the movie, the things put inside the microwave oven are not food. A beaker of water must be kept inside the oven to absorb the microwave energy. If otherwise, the intensity of microwave in the oven can become extremely high and may cause harm to the user.
