Kei Heep English Salon 2016
In light of the declining English proficiency amongst Hong Kong
students in general, with the help of the Keiheep Past Student
Association, Kei Heep Secondary School embarked an innovative
program to provide an unique opportunity for participating students
to engage in English conversation with volunteers around the world
via “Skype” and “Wechat”. During the first half of 2016, a total of
eleven Saturday morning sessions had been held in the school
premises under the supervision of the school staff and assisted by
volunteers of the alumni association.
The program began on March 5 2016 and completed on June 5 before the
school term ended.
26 students from F.1 to F.5 participated in the 2016 program. The
participating students attended a weekly discussion of a chosen
topic with volunteers via the use of skype. A total of 32 volunteers
age ranging from 12 to 68 in Canada, Australia, USA and Hong Kong
participated on a rotational basis in each session.
The students who have completed the program were given a special
treat in a unique tour of the Marine Coastal Laborary, 3 D printing
lab and the student housing facilities of the Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology followed by a buffet lunch on July 9 2016.
Each student was also awarded a prize in a raffle draw. Prizes
include an Ipad, two Samsung Tablets, Parker Pens, USB flashdrives,
Shanghai Mechanical Watch, Digital Watches, LED flashlights and
iphone sleeves all donated by members of the alumni association.
This English Salon Program is probably the first of its kind in
connecting English native speaking volunteers from around the world
in helping non English speaking students to improve their English at
no cost to the students. We have witnessed the progress of the
students throughout this valuable experience. The students are given
the opportunity to open up their horizon in speaking to volunteers
from a wide spectrum of experience, geographical locations,
different age groups and various cultural background. Although the
sessions are brief, the goal of enhancing motivation has been well
accomplished.
Taking full advantage of modern communication technology which is
only available in recent years, we hope this pilot project which
would be continued in the years ahead would become more popular with
non English speaking local students in the near future. Further
support from more volunteers would be much appreciated. (Lawrence
Lo, 65/C1 class)
